Poetry

Last week in class when we discussed poetry I really enjoyed it because I like poetry, however, I really didn't agree that free verse should be considered poetry. At least the examples we were given seemed a little weak. I guess if the free verse had a powerful feel and meaning behind it i can see it being considered poetry, but just putting together anything and claiming it's poetry seems a little weak to me.

I do agree on the importance of poetry in childrens lit because it does teach moral lessons, tells stories, and due to its rhythm and rhyme it's easy for children to follow and enjoy.

Our book defines poetry by a poet’s intuition of the truth. I believe that this is too broad of a definition. I think it should also include such features like rhyme and rhythm. I agree with Melyssa that free verse should not be considered poetry. If that is the case, than you have to consider any type of ranting or raving as a form of poetry. Even if there is reason and emotion behind the tirade it still should show some type of rhythm or rhyme. I believe most of the songs that we like to hear are defiantly a form of poetry. It involves rhythm and rhyme and also has emotion and reason behind the lyrics.
